Lawsonry's Week in Review! → lawsonry.com

The last full week in February was an exciting one here at Lawsonry. We relaunched the site from scratch, published a whole slew of fantastic articles, and did a lot of other great things that are too boring to tell you about (but that you’ll ultimately love).

And now, here’s the latest addition to Lawsonry: This Week in Review! (Coming soon to email inboxes near you!)

THE GOOD:

  • Maryland became the 8th state in the US to legalize same sex marriage.Though it may be contested on the fall ballot, it’s a great stride for couples all over the state.
  • Virginia’s governor withdrew support for the mandatory transvaginal ultrasound bill. Okay, so it’s not great news, but it’s been a rough week. We’ll take even questionable victories at this point.
  • Wisconsin celebrated a year of standing up for civil liberties. As the fight for civil rights in the most corporate era continues on in Madison and all over the country, we took a look back at where it all started.

THE BAD:

  • Mitt Romney’s Campaign. With a campaign co-chair egregiously abusing his power against an undocumented immigrant, a spotty debate performance, and a continued failure to seem like he isn’t an anthropomorphic robot sent from the future to kill the Republican party once and for all, it’s been another bad week for Mittens.
  • The GOP debates…again. This time taking on birth control and going to war with Iran, the only thing amusing about the 26th GOP debate was Gingrich claiming BMW and Toyota as part of the American auto industry. And our hilarious liveblog, of course.
  • Rick Santorum. What’s bad about Rick Santorum? Sigh. Just…everything.

THE UGLY:

  • Texas throw women’s health under the bus. Desperate to cling to its anti-choice legislation, Texas has sacrificed millions of dollars in federal aid…and federally funded programs to provide health care to more than 130,000 low-income women.
  • Yes Virginia, you ARE ugly this week. While it appears now that the Virginia governor won’t sign the bill into law, the legislature is still voting on whether or not to force women to undergo unnecessary vaginal ultrasound. Virginia has also effectively shut down all 22 abortion clinics in the state by passing the strictest health codes in the country in regards to clinics.
  • Prison, Inc. We’ve seen the future of our justice system, and it is NOT pretty. As states move to privatize the prison system, part of the contracts being given to these private prison companies include a guarantee a steady inmate population.

Indiana’s Bob Morris Apologizes for Calling Girl Scouts a “Feminist Lesbian Communist Front for Planned Parenthood”  → lawsonry.com

Indiana lawmaker Bob Morris is convinced that Girl Scout troops are a sexually-promiscuous front for Planned Parenthood who endorse lesbian, feminist, and communist agendas. Morris discovered this shocking by talking to some “knowledgeable constituents” and “a small amount of Web-based research.”

I wish we were making this up! Follow the link to read the whole article.

BREAKING NEWS: Texas lets 130,000 people (most of them women) lose access to affordable reproductive health.  → lawsonry.com

stfusexists:

Texas has decided to violate federal policies concerning the Women’s Health Program of Medicaid, and has lost $40 million of federal funding towards reproductive health care in the process. Way to go Texas! Now you’ve produced Rick Perry, W, and THIS abomination of legislation.

punchdeck replied to your post: Re: The Feminists All Laughed At Me

I thought this commenter was trying to say he learned something, not that he was really criticizing. Did I miss something?

I thought so too, Punchdeck, but one of this other comments illustrated how feminists are one-sided and if they really want equality then they should be talking about male oppression, too. I think the comment may stand alone as a monologue about honest introspection, but given this person’s history of comments that I’ve had to delete, he’s definitely talking about how feminism hates men and ostracizes them from society.

Terrible, really.

Cop spends weeks to trick an 18-year-old into possession and sale of a gram of pot → boingboing.net

More fun from the self-loathing society: This American Life had a show about how young female undercover cops infiltrated a high school and flirted with boys to entrap them into selling pot, so they could charge them with felonies and destroy their lives at an early age.

Last year in three high schools in Florida, several undercover police officers posed as students. The undercover cops went to classes, became Facebook friends and flirted with the other students. One 18-year-old honor student named Justin fell in love with an attractive 25-year-old undercover cop after spending weeks sharing stories about their lives, texting and flirting with each other.

One day she asked Justin if he smoked pot. Even though he didn’t smoke marijuana, the love-struck teen promised to help find some for her. Every couple of days she would text him asking if he had the marijuana. Finally, Justin was able to get it to her. She tried to give him $25 for the marijuana and he said he didn’t want the money — he got it for her as a present.

A short while later, the police did a big sweep and arrest 31 students — including Justin. Almost all were charged with selling a small amount of marijuana to the undercover cops. Now Justin has a felony hanging over his head.

Okay, on a serious note: the fact that our tax dollars funds this kind of crap is outrageous.

“If a man acts in accordance with the norms of masculinity, he will not be
penalized but will gain privilege (or there may be some harm, *but the
harm is outweighed by the privilege gained*). Serious penalty for men
comes only when they stray from the norms of masculinity (or other
norms). But, then they aren’t oppressed because they are men, but because
they are not meeting a particular standard.

A woman who acts in accordance with the norms of femininity *is*
penalized for her conformity. Eg., women who are indecisive are acting in a
stereotypically feminine manner, and are mocked for being indecisive,
are turned down for jobs, etc. And a woman who is decisive is also
penalized for her lack of femininity. Women experience social
sanctions for both conformity and non-conformity to the norms of
femininity.”

“A better phrasing might be “men are more expected to be violent”
which IS true - but those against whom they are violent are largely women
and children. Now, when a man is violent against a man, he may be
prosecuted or not, depending upon other factors like race (if they’re both
black, probably not, if they’re both white, than class comes into play -
is one richer than the other, than probably, if they’re both working
class, probably not, and so on). If a woman is violent toward a man, she
is almost sure to be prosecuted -and to go to jail, because it’s not
women’s place to be violent. Her violence shows that there’s something
wrong with her. Note how this works to men’s advantage, particularly in
cases of battering. On the other hand, when men are violent against women,
prosecution is relatively unlikely, even now, and even when there is
prosecution, jail is an iffy outcome. Partially, that’s why women are in
so much more danger if they try to prosecute. Again, note how this work’s
to men’s advantage.”

Dear Senator

Below is the letter I’m sending to all the VA Senators who voted in favor of Senator Howell’s amendment to SB 484 - the one that requires men to get digital rectal exams if they want a prescription for Viagra - and voted against the bill entirely. Unfortunately, it’s at the house now. Expect a complete write-up, a change.org campaign, and a hell of a lot of social media pushing this weekend to get this bill rejected.

Dear Senator,

My name is Jesse Lawson, and I run a socially progressive online journal in Woodbridge, VA. I am writing to you today to express my appreciation for your January 30th Yea vote on Senator Howell’s proposed amendment to SB 484 that would require a rectal examination and cardiac stress test prior to the prescription of medication for erectile dysfunction. Although the amendment was rejected 19Y-21N, I firmly believe that you were in the right to vote for an amendment that would level the playing field for both genders on this highly controversial issue.

Although you voted against it, the Senate approved SB 484 21Y-18N on February 1st, and now it is making its way through the House. Unless it is returned, I understand that there is nothing more you can do except to continue to support the interests of the women of this state and the rest of this country. On behalf of my journal and all of my readers, I would like to thank you for your commitment to social progress in Virginia. We all look forward to your consistent support of anti-discriminatory legislation amendments and bills that help to promote equality and fair social conditions.

Respectfully,

Jesse Lawson
