Below is the letter I’m sending to all the VA Senators who voted in favor of Senator Howell’s amendment to SB 484 - the one that requires men to get digital rectal exams if they want a prescription for Viagra - and voted against the bill entirely. Unfortunately, it’s at the house now. Expect a complete write-up, a change.org campaign, and a hell of a lot of social media pushing this weekend to get this bill rejected.
Dear Senator,
My name is Jesse Lawson, and I run a socially progressive online journal in Woodbridge, VA. I am writing to you today to express my appreciation for your January 30th Yea vote on Senator Howell’s proposed amendment to SB 484 that would require a rectal examination and cardiac stress test prior to the prescription of medication for erectile dysfunction. Although the amendment was rejected 19Y-21N, I firmly believe that you were in the right to vote for an amendment that would level the playing field for both genders on this highly controversial issue.
Although you voted against it, the Senate approved SB 484 21Y-18N on February 1st, and now it is making its way through the House. Unless it is returned, I understand that there is nothing more you can do except to continue to support the interests of the women of this state and the rest of this country. On behalf of my journal and all of my readers, I would like to thank you for your commitment to social progress in Virginia. We all look forward to your consistent support of anti-discriminatory legislation amendments and bills that help to promote equality and fair social conditions.
Respectfully,
Jesse Lawson
