The last full week in February was an exciting one here at Lawsonry. We relaunched the site from scratch, published a whole slew of fantastic articles, and did a lot of other great things that are too boring to tell you about (but that you’ll ultimately love).
And now, here’s the latest addition to Lawsonry: This Week in Review! (Coming soon to email inboxes near you!)
THE GOOD:
- Maryland became the 8th state in the US to legalize same sex marriage.Though it may be contested on the fall ballot, it’s a great stride for couples all over the state.
- Virginia’s governor withdrew support for the mandatory transvaginal ultrasound bill. Okay, so it’s not great news, but it’s been a rough week. We’ll take even questionable victories at this point.
- Wisconsin celebrated a year of standing up for civil liberties. As the fight for civil rights in the most corporate era continues on in Madison and all over the country, we took a look back at where it all started.
THE BAD:
- Mitt Romney’s Campaign. With a campaign co-chair egregiously abusing his power against an undocumented immigrant, a spotty debate performance, and a continued failure to seem like he isn’t an anthropomorphic robot sent from the future to kill the Republican party once and for all, it’s been another bad week for Mittens.
- The GOP debates…again. This time taking on birth control and going to war with Iran, the only thing amusing about the 26th GOP debate was Gingrich claiming BMW and Toyota as part of the American auto industry. And our hilarious liveblog, of course.
- Rick Santorum. What’s bad about Rick Santorum? Sigh. Just…everything.
THE UGLY:
- Texas throw women’s health under the bus. Desperate to cling to its anti-choice legislation, Texas has sacrificed millions of dollars in federal aid…and federally funded programs to provide health care to more than 130,000 low-income women.
- Yes Virginia, you ARE ugly this week. While it appears now that the Virginia governor won’t sign the bill into law, the legislature is still voting on whether or not to force women to undergo unnecessary vaginal ultrasound. Virginia has also effectively shut down all 22 abortion clinics in the state by passing the strictest health codes in the country in regards to clinics.
- Prison, Inc. We’ve seen the future of our justice system, and it is NOT pretty. As states move to privatize the prison system, part of the contracts being given to these private prison companies include a guarantee a steady inmate population.
