Studies of the health effects of Taser International’s stun guns are 75 percent more likely to deem the weapons safe when researchers have ties to the company, a new report concludes.

Tasers are certainly better than firearms, but we should restrict their use by police officers in the same way we restrict firearms.  We have too many officers who are under the impression that it’s okay to use a Taser on suspects who show even the least amount of resistance (and some who don’t). The result is that the detained suspects die from being tasered, and law enforcement needs to attribute it to nebulous conditions like “excited delirium” (without any evidence to back it up) to keep themselves from being sued.
